Parenting is one of the most challenging and important jobs we’ll ever do and one for which most of us are least trained. Oftentimes, without a lot of forethought, we parent as we were parented. And then when parenting challenges arise, as they undoubtedly do, we react the same way our parents did with us. However, as we grow into more conscious awareness, we realize that much of the disconnection we feel with our children has less to do with them and more to do with unresolved triggers from our childhood. This four part series is based on the work of Dr. Shefali Tsabary, NY Times best selling author of The Conscious Parent and The Awakened Family.
Part 1 of the series Connecting Deeply with your Kids: An Introduction to Conscious Parenting lays out the framework around our relationship with our kids. We deconstruct the notion of the power and value of discipline, as well as expand our perspective of how our child’s behavior is a form of communication.
Connecting Deeply with your Kids, Parts 2, 3, and 4 are deep dives into the work that it takes to truly become a conscious parent. We analyze in depth several myths of parenting, such as the idea that the goal of parenting is to raise a happy and successful child. We also consider parenting challenges from the perspective of, “Is this situation about me or my child?” We discuss the notion that we do not need to “fix” our children but rather create the conditions for them to rise. Throughout the series, we are invited to look at parenting from a very different paradigm. Dr. Shefali’s quotes are powerful reminders of the importance of connection. For example, she states,
“Whether you have an infant or a teen, your children need to feel that just because they exist, they delight you. They need to know they don’t need to do anything to earn your undivided attention. They deserve to feel as if, just by being born, they have earned the right to be adored.”
This series is not a "how to" or a "quick fix" for your child and I will not be giving "tips" on parenting.
